From Red Core to Light Elegance – Colour Control in Douglas Fir Flooring

Douglas fir is a popular choice in both new builds and renovations – especially in large plank formats, where its warm, reddish tones and pronounced grain patterns offer a striking and natural look. But this distinctive colouring can also pose a challenge when a lighter and more neutral appearance is desired.

Fortunately, there are reliable ways to control the colour of Douglas fir – without compromising the natural beauty of the wood.

A Floor in Transition – in the Hands of Professionals

In this project, the craftsman worked with a classic Douglas floor, where the goal was to brighten the surface and reduce the reddish hue often seen in the heartwood.

The solution was a two-step treatment:

1. FC Precolorwas first applied as a base coat. It acts as a colour-adjusting primer, neutralising the warm pigments in the wood.

2. The floor was then finished with Floor Oil 2K Extra White, providing a light, white-pigmented surface with depth and a smooth matte finish.

The result is a noticeably transformed look: the natural character of Douglas is preserved, but the tone is now lighter and more modern – perfect for Nordic or minimalist interiors.

Before and After

In the photo below, the difference between the two stages is clear:

  • Right side (towards the bottom of the image): Douglas treated with Precolor only
  • Left side (towards the top of the image): Same floor after the application of Floor Oil 2K Extra White

The contrast speaks for itself. The Precolor tones down the reddish hue, while the oil seals and enhances the surface with a soft, whitewashed look – all while preserving the wood’s natural grain.

Benefits of This Treatment

  • Colour control: Adjust the natural tone of Douglas fir to match your desired aesthetic
  • Texture retention: The grain and character of the wood remain visible, even with white pigmentation
  • Durability: Floor Oil 2K creates a strong, long-lasting surface
  • Flexibility: This method can be adapted to suit various styles and finishes
